Jesus made water into wine…just not in Mississippi.

The county in which I reside in Mississippi recently turned down a couple’s request to open up a local brewery. Here is the local news coverage Long story short, the business would have brought a sizable amount of tax revenue to the county and probably a few jobs. Did you also know MS is also one of only 3 States in the Union to outlaw home brewing by individuals? What could possibly be the reasons for this seemingly backwards thinking? Hmmm. Same reason we still can’t buy beer on Sundays in some places in this hick State.
I have made the coorelation between organized religion and ignorance on many occasions. It’s uncanny how many times you can find your “Church Leaders” at the forefront of the lets not move forward movement. Here’s a news flash for you hypocritical jackasses. People like alcohol. If you doubt that, do a little research on the overwhelming success that was prohibition. I know this irritates you to your core because you really, REALLY want to impose your “supposed” morality on the entire country.’ Let’s get prayer back in our schools!’… ‘Beat your male children if they start acting gay’…‘Let’s impose religious law across the land…like Sharia…’ Wait a second…

I think you should buy some property, put up a barbed wire fence and just go ahead and form a proper cult and be done with it. But then, of course, you wouldn’t be able to stick your aloof, holier than thou noses in what everybody else was doing. Maybe you would have more time to work on your personal relationship with God. Now that is a novel idea.

Look, I understand the grey area between standing tall for what you believe and diving into outright debauchery. I don’t allow (much) hardcore cussing on my Facebook page and can only listen to the country stations when my kids are in the car. The difference is I am not out there telling you that’s what you should be doing. Figure out what’s important folks.

Smily, I think the objectionable prepared letter was that of one of the members of the Board of Supervisors who made his statement that he was not convinced by the Brewery folks retorts to the complaints of citizens before they even had the chance to speak in the hearing. So the rub here is that the Board of Supervisors walked into that meeting without remotely planning on giving them a fair hearing.

      MMMMMMM…. Beer.

I need a beer and I need to see somethin’ nekkid!

Isnt there a pool hall in Vancleave that sells beer now? What’s the dif?

I always think of micro brewerys as kind of novel and classy places.

I know you said the churches had their letter ready before the meeting. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it carried any weight. Maybe it was about the location.

I’m just trying to give the benefit of the doubt cuz if it was for moral objections it just doesnt make much sense. It aint like Vancleave is a dry town…..

I think Mac has one of them meth labs up there.

I hope the people who want to start the brewery find another location and make a go of it. As I travel around the country, I find the local microbrews to be real assets to their communities and great tourist magnets to boot.

As for the religiosity factor, I can only offer up my usual

Perhaps they should offer their neighbors a beer discount or appeal to them in some way – hey if I could get some good alcohol across the street rather than running to the liquor store I might take a different view.

            Whoa, read that article Mac.

This is downright ridiculous and ignorant. It’s a manufacturing facility not a retail store as the would be owner and operator pointed out. As for traffic, anyone who drives around the Cleave regularly can tell you there are always tractor trailers and big trucks clogging up the main roads. But it’s the Cleave for fuck’s sake, it’s not like 3-5 more big trucks on the road are going cause a traffic jam. Plus as a small and new company I doubt they will have more than 2 trucks.

How many of these supervisors spend time complaining with friends about Obama’s big government and anti-business policies? I’d bet almost all of them. Yet here we are. More ignorant hypocrisy from dead beat suck fish who don’t have a clue.

            Blank stares all around.

Good point about the location Stephen. Thanks for putting this over here. I will parrot what I said when we were talking before for the reading audience here. The planning commission (those responsible for such concerns) ok’ed the brewery. The politicians bowed to the religious leaders, no matter what they say. If this had just been the concerned neighbors of the brewery, I would stand behind the decision 100%. But that isn’t what happened. The churches rallied their troops and got to the politicians prior to the meeting. They had their denial letter typed up before the meeting went down. Now, while I support any group getting together and petitioning their government, it gives me the raw ass when that petitioning is based on hypocritical nonsense. Why don’t the churches wage war on all the bars? Those establishments where day after day, folks come in and drink before getting in their cars to drive home.

Mac, I see two different issues here. First is the hypocrisy of organized religion in this country not just Mississippi. It has nothing to do with education or specific beliefs just power over others as you have mentioned. They have the opinion “don’t look at the man behind the curtain” (or what’s in his hand) just his public face. Out of those names on the petition a large majority consumed an adult beverage with in 24 hrs of signing it, just don’t tell my Preacher. The justifiable issue to me is location. One reason people live in non-commercial areas to stay away from traffic congestion. The deliveries and shipments for the brewery will not be made in a Prius. The amount of tractor-trailer rigs that will be required to handle the Owner’s posted tax income to the county will be almost non-stop. Throw out the religion crap and they still will have a non-stop fight with their neighbors who would have sued them into closing up shop. I asked why it was voted against and the real reason is location, put it in a commercial district of Vancleave and I will be happy to cross the river along with the other Baptist.

Good point Dan. Anyone who has been to a New Orleans game knows Saints and beer go together like peas and carrots.

I don’t recall seeing any math on here before, so I’m a bit suspect on the quality of your correlations.

Jackson County should also outlaw buffets, too, since people are commonly known to go to these places and make gluttons of themselves.

                      (Most) everything in moderation.
