It is part of my job as a fireman to go speak with school children about fire safety. I think this is statistically a waste of time. You are very unlikely to ever experience a fire in your lifetime. Maybe “waste” is a bit strong. It could be better allocated elsewhere. Our time would be better spent telling the kids what to do in the event they are involved in a car wreck. They will, almost certainly, experience that. Or I could talk to them about other eventualities in their lives.
“Who needs to be elected President kids?” – Firefighter Mac
Little Timmy “My Dad says Obama is a communist Muslim. He’s voting for Romney.”
Little Mary “My Mom says the niggers and fags are ruining the country.”
Little Johnny “My Dad said the Earth is 6000 years old and the end is near.”
Little Jerome “Most every night, Daddy gets drunk and hit’s Mama. I hide in the closet.”
On second thought kids, let’s talk about not playing with matches and Smokey Bear.

As a kid I knew what to keep my mouth shut about. My kids do not have those limits..but their mouths did cause me some embarrassment from time to time
. I think in general addressing small topics to a variety of school age children can be somewhat depressing especially when there are other pressing matters at hand. I’m not sure what that says to the children that are having problems, I think most of the time they are just used to it, even though they know it’s wrong.October 29 2012 -
